I’m psyched. I just ordered some Naked Ladies bulbs for my garden. The Naked Ladies are also known as Pink Ladies, Magic Plant and the Resurrection Plant.

This is a bulb that is a native of South Africa. It is an Amaryllis Belladonna, not to be confused with the Amaryllis that is sold at the holidays for indoor blooming. That Amaryllis is really an Hippeastrum. On the West Coast , Naked Ladies have almost become a wildflower as it naturalizes easily there.

The name Naked Ladies comes from it’s growing habits. First, leaves appear and then die down , then up shoots a stem to a height of about 24″ to 36″ with 10 to 12 trumpet shaped flowers adorning the top.

To Plant:

  • Prepare a place to plant with good loamy soil and good sun exposure.
  • Plant bulb about 5″ down in the soil with pointed side up leaving about 1/4 inch of the bulb uncovered.
  • Plant in the early spring in areas where there is a hard frost in winter. Plant in the late fall in other zones.
  • After blooms fade away cut the stem down to the base to promote good blooming the subsequent season.
  • In zones lower than 6 (3-5) this bulb can be planted early spring and then dug up for overwintering indoors or protected in a garage or basement.
  • Hardy in zones 7-11.

Attributes:

  • Deer resistant
  • Fragrant
  • Useful for Containers, sunny flower beds and rock gardens.
  • Plants are deer resistant and fragrant.

Colors range from white with lavender and pink hues, to pink and lavender.
