Japanese Fern Leaf Maple Tree (Right)

There are  many ways to have a beautiful yard and do so without spending a fortune.  Here are some tips:

Bargain Shopping:

  • Shop at discount garden centers and home centers such as K-Mart, Wal-mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards. There is a great variety of plants to choose from and usually plants that are suited to your area.
  • Check toward the end of planting seasons for bargains. Peak planting season starts around Mother’s Day. By the end of June you can find many perennials on sale, flowering shrubs such as Hydrandea, and Roses. The Japanese Flowering Maple in the right of the photo was small but on sale for about 12 dollars when purchased. It grew beautifully in only a couple of years. Purchased at a nursery , a mature plant would have cost around 200 dollars.

Propagation by Division:

  • Divide your perennials. Perennials usually mature after 3 years then it benefits the plants and your budget to divide them and create new beds or areas of interest in your landscape with your new plants.
  • Hosta, and Liriope are great plants to purchase for landscaping and for propagating . These plants are very hardy. It is best to divide and replant in the fall….but I have had great luck in the spring as well. Or anytime if they are planted in a partly shady spot and well watered.
  • Make gifts from your divided plants. Many friends who enjoy gardening would love to have a great plant that you dug up or divided.
  • Bulbs can be divided also.
  • There are extensive instructions for dividing plants and bulbs but it is not that difficult. Just dig up your perennial and with a sharp knife or spade divide your plant into sections leaving enough root in each section and then plant ; watering in well. Keep watering until roots take hold and then nature will provide.

Recycle:

  • Recycle your rain water by collection, soil by saving old planting soil and amending it, composting and repurposing your thinned out or divided plants.
  • Share your divisions or extra plants from thinning out beds.
  • Or be an entrepreneur. Pot your divisions and have a “Yard” sale!!!

Ya learn smoehting new everyday. It’s true I guess!

This post appears to get a great deal of visitors. How do you advertise it? It offers a nice unique spin on things. I guess having something real or substantial to post about is the most important thing.

hi-ya, I like all your posts, keep them coming.

This seems a very active site. How on earth do you manage to keep up with approving all the comments?

I’m impressed with this internet web site , real I am a huge fan . Outstanding post, you might have pointed out some superb points , I besides think this s a rather fantastic internet site.

Thanks for the info…In my feeble personal attempts to be “green” and “healthful”, I eat only the healhiest of foods, most of which I develop Myself. I use Seaweed Fertilizers and Natural Seaweed to grow my produce. This way I can precisely maintain the nutrient content of my food. Have any of you guys used ShoreGrow? I discover this the best.

Great cmoomn sense here. Wish I?d thought of that.
